History of the charity

Grainery Care was established in July 2000. It took over the incorporated association previously known as Coalfields Diakonia Incorporated. Coalfields Diakonia had operated in the Cessnock area for 15 years in association with Valley Medical Practice.

Grainery Care works with the “least, the last and the lost” in the Hunter region to bring them “Life in all its fullness” (Our motto).

Now based in Mayfield, Newcastle, the objects of the association are..

To establish and carry on welfare and benevolent services solely for the benefit of persons in necessitous circumstances including;

The direct relief of poverty, sickness, suffering, distress, misfortune, destitution and helplessness, of the inhabitants of the Hunter Valley and in particular the residents of the Greater Cessnock, Maitland, Port Stephens, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas, without distinction of age, sex, race, political inclination, religious views, or other opinions,

The charity will enlist and cooperate with the local authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in community efforts to reduce social and educational disadvantages and their consequences in maladaptive lifestyle patterns.

History of GCC @ 252 Maitland Rd, Mayfield

For over 20 years Grainery Care has been providing empowerment and support to the

people of the Hunter region. Having operated out of The Grainery Church and different rented properties in Mayfield and Islington, in 2020 we began the search for new premises in a location more central to the community we serve.

In 2020 we purchased an old bakery in Mayfield with the vision of turning it into a community centre. Through generous support from donors, skilled volunteers, and government-funded grant programs, we renovated & opened our purpose-built community centre in 2023. Now home to:

  • Foodcare - our affordable grocery program
  • Welfare services & Crisis support
  • Cafe 252 - a community cafe with a Pay It Forward mission
  • Free community breakfasts
  • Meeting rooms for support groups
  • Units for our Supported Accommodation Program

and more, The Grainery Care Centre is a place for any one, in any walk of life, to come and find hope, dignity, and provision.

Will you partner with us in raising $100,000 to cover the completion of Stage 2 at the Grainery Care Centre?

Your tax deductible donation will positively impact the lives of thousands in our community through the provision of cheap and low-cost food, empowering training and support ,and life-saving accommodation for people in need.
